Slow Club gig

So I just got back from an amazing show in my home town Ashford. The equally amazing band Slow club were playing. The gig was in my local church. I am buzzing with smiles of joy right now. I first saw Slow Club (Rebecca and Charles) 9 or 10 years ago back in Nottingham when I lived there for university. I was immediately struck by their beautifully written songs, and joyful tunes. I have seen them many times since, but I was lucky enough to see them again on Wednesday.

The venue was an old church I used to visit when I was at school. The church was beautiful because of the acoustics, the sound just bounced around the room in a perfect way. Listening to Slow Club again was so strange. Mostly because I was so young when I first saw them, my uni days were such a long time ago. They have been a solid part of my music taste for nearly 10 years. Listening to them again while they sang their new music, which is so calming and relaxed made me realise how much life has changed. How much I have changed.

Rebecca and Charles' voices are still as gorgeous as ever. In this performance they both gave each other the chance to shine, letting each other take the centre stage. I loved listening to their voices. But of course I just fall in love with them all over again when they sing together.

After the performance I managed to speak to both Rebecca and Charles. I said to them about how it was amazing to see them in my home town after seeing them for the first time back in Nottingham. We talked about how long ago that actually was, crazy really. They signed my vinyl and an old CD I had. We also talked about how nice it was to listen to their new music, and they enjoyed performing it. It was a wonderful night, and made me remember how much I love seeing live music. It really is good for the soul.

i wanna be jesse's girl....

i had an odd weekend filled with random chats, people getting upset, feeling angry, feeling sad, late night walks home, watching the sun rise, doctor who filled Saturday and other things. the sky photo was taken very early Sunday morning, and the sky was beautiful. on Tuesday i brought the coolest book in a charity shop, its a guide to old Kodak camera's---its really old, and the photos are amazing.today at work i was given my train tickets and hotel information for my trip to bridgwater. i am really looking forward to meeting lots of new people. plus i will be helping put all the new mannequins and other visual bits and pieces together, plus setting up the new store. its gonna be hard work, ten days straight work, but i do think it will be good experience and i will have fun...well hopefully! at the moment i am also getting excited because next week i am going to see flight of the conchords in London with my sister! i cannot wait! plus also i have Glastonbury to look forward to next month. i have got most of my stuff for it, we brought a tent the other day, but i am trying to work out who i really wanna see. i think i have come to the conclusion that we will wing it, and just see whats on, when they are on, but i must must see broken bells. oh also currently all i am listening to are songs from glee...run joey run is my favorite, plus Jessie's girl. i love Jesse, aka Jonathan groff so much! he is awesome.

be the first time

sometimes, i question myself far too much. i know this will sound rather odd, but i have always wished i had grown up in America. i always seem to get obsessed with things from America...i know that's a bit odd. but things like 'hello my name is stickers', milk in cartons, and something that i love so much is the labels on American cd's!--i think they are bloody fab, and such a good idea! (American readers will probably think i am very odd, as this is probably normal for them). oreos are another love for me. somethings at the moment are making me sad, my favourite band in the whole planet is the shins, and i hope that one day i will be able to see them live..things like that makes living in the UK annoying!----plus!----my godparents when you Boston for new year, and asked my parents if i wanted anything from the states..ie, music, and my parents forgot to tell me!---aaah i really need coconut records' 2nd album!! they got me the first one, as they are not on sale in the UK...so that has made me sad. hehe.HOWEVER, i did get a wonderful card in the post today. after a long morning of work, to be greeted by a letter is one of the best things in the world. it was from the beauiful amy from http://mypointeofview.blogspot.com. thank you ever so much amy! it was a lovely suprise!--ooh and thank you for the tea! yum! this is why i love having a blog, you get to meet such amazing people.

Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You're off to Great Places!
You're off and away!

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself any direction you choose.
You're on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go.

You'll look up and down streets. Look 'em over with care.
About some you will say, "I don't choose to go there."

With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet,
you're too smart to go down any not-so-good street.
And you may not find any your want to go down.
In that case, of course you'll head straight out of town.

It's opener there
in the wide open air.

poor jim

this is my little mate. i got him today. he reminds me of one of my old friends, who i love very much. she had one just like this, hence he reminds me of her. normally with me, when it comes to movies, if i like the poster, or the trailer, or just hear a little bit about a movie, i know whether i will like it or not. for an example, when i saw the movie poster for eagle vs shark (the sleeping bag pic) i knew i would love this film. or when i heard Ellen page speak in the first few secs of Juno, i knew i would like it. today i went into town and went into my local music and DVD store and was looking through the DVDs. while walking up and down the aisles, i found two movies that just on the titles and image alone, i wanted to have a look. i know you should never judge a book by its cover, but for me, with movies, sometimes it works. these movies were; Lonesome Jim and the Puffy Chair. if any of you have every watched these movies, please let me know what they are like!! :) i read the backs of the DVDs, and they left me wanting more, however i did not buy these there and then as i wanted to do a little more research about these films. as i have seem to have any paper on me i ended up writing the titles on my hand, this really odd looking girl gave me a really weird look..i don't know what that was about.also today i purchased the she and him album, which i was very happy to find, as everywhere i have looked has been out of stock, also once soundtrack and hot chips new-ish album. very much happy with my new music, as i have not brought a cd in such a long time.

on the way back home

ah so i packed up my uni room and left for summer. i felt really sad leaving my friends behind, but also felt happy as i was to see my old friends at home. so it was Saturday morning, i was in a bit oh a rush to get ready. i hugged my friends goodbye..i came 4th this year in big brother..(the last one in the flat is the winner) i came second last year, and then was out the door.

got my train with time to spare..and then the train left...bye bye Nottingham, home of the great Robin Hood. the train i was on was a fast one, so the time went really fast. and then i was in London. by this point i could not wait to get home and see my family and friends. then catch the London train to Kent. i read a really cool graphic novel that i picked up the other day, its worth a read. its called the plain janes by Cecil Castellucci and Jim Rugg. Its about 4 girls called Jane and how they want to get art into their town.
ah while on the train home i was listening to my new fave Coconut Records...
"Don’t talk to me that way, Don’t talk to me that way, I don’t ever want to hear you say, Anything, Cause you’ve been nighttiming baby, It’s starting to show, Cause you’ve been nighttiming baby, It’s out of control, Yeah you’ve been nighttiming baby, And you ought to get home, Yeah you’ve been nighttiming baby, Uh huh." oh i love it so much! i must find a way to get the cd!
then i was home...from the dullness of London to the bright greenness of Kent..i knew i was home.

i was going out for drinks to catch up with friends when i got back. and it was so much fun, and i really felt happy that i was home.

play that record again!

ah still the weather is annoying me!! waking up to rain and then sun and then rain again. another day of pottering around town... i went to a show at a gallery today. The show was called 'Cover Versions'. it is an exhibition of recycled record sleeves- revamped and reinvented by Artists working in a variety of mediums. it sounded like a really cool show, but when i went and had a look i kinda felt bad. these really odd record sleeves had been painted, cut up, stuck bits to them...i know its all in the name of art...but it still felt wrong. some of them had been painted beautiful. there were some controversial ones, which included some Beatles and John Lennon covers with 'blood' (or red paint) and Yoko on. It still did not feel right that the artists had done this. It kinda felt like someone had defaced a book or something. But i then thought the records must have belonged to the artists. It was really interesting to see how the artists wanted to change the sleeves with their own views and feelings.

when i got in i started looking at my cds...i wondered if these will get defaced in a few years for the sake of art.

boop...boop..dot to dot day 2

ah did not get up very early today!!! so sleepy from the night before. oh and the weather was horrible!! rain rain...and more rain. the first band we had to see today was Jocasta Sleeps. they were amazing!! a great way to start the day.

we then had to walk all the way to the social to see Lena Rez who has a beautiful voice. however we walked all the way in the rain to get there and she had been cancelled!!! ah and then we had to walk all the way back in the rain. When we got back to Rock city it was time for Peggy Sue and the Pirates. they are a fun female folk-punk duo. they were really cool and loved how different all their songs were.
Photobucket
we then went over the nottingham trent uni and saw Animal Kingdom. they were amazing!!! i am so happy we went to see them. the lead singer's voice was so different from anything i have heard in such a long time. then straight back over to Rock city again to see Talk Taxis. they were pretty funky and had a bit of funk, blues and dance music thrown in.
Photobucket
Photobucket
after that we went back to see NO KIDS. i had been waiting all weekend to see this crazy band. before they started there was a comedy singer who keep saying "..bye". classic. NO KIDS made me think of getting spoons and pots and pans and making my own type of music, they were so fun!
Photobucket
it was then time to see get cape. wear cape. fly. they were really cool. the best bit was when we meet this lovely couple who told us all about all the other bands and singers they have ever seen. and all of the ones they saw at the weekend too. they were so sweet. straight after gcwcf played we ran over the rescue rooms to try and get in to see Santogold. it was a mad rush, but we got in! the place was packed. she was brilliant! good way to finish the night...however we ended up checking out Kissy Sell Out. He has the biggest grin in the whole world! :D

..beep beep...dot..to...dot...day 1

ah what a mad mad crazy weekend!! i have not had a chance to get back on here and write anything!! went to dot to dot with my friends at the weekend! it is so good to hear new music!! and up and coming bands and singers.

well the weekend started off at 10ish when we went to get our wristbands, and then went to see the first band at 3ish; Cheeky Cheeky and the Nosebleeds. haha, a class act! typical indie/rock stuff, very cool.

After we then headed off to rock city to catch Metronomy who are a band from Brighton. their shows consist of crazy dance routines and light shows, including push lights suck to their chests!!! Their music was amazing, and got the crowd going, we all loved them. i missed out on seeing them when i went to see Kate Nash so this made up for it!!

Photobucket

After Metronomy we then went to see 1990s. They we really good, and had some cool tunes. then we went off to see team waterpolo. ah however, we ended up seeing this band...and it was not team waterpolo..they were crazy!! and i was very upset and annoyed that i did not get to see them or the little ones!!! Oh i was so looking forward to seeing them. we ended up having a few drinks and then headed back home for a break and something to eat. We then made out way back to see the Holloways. they are pretty good, however some of the band members upset the audience..and it wasnt good!! however the music was good and upbeat!
Photobucket

After the Holloways i was really really looking forward to seeing Slow Club. the day had been a bit of a washout for me as the little ones were not playing. however Slow Club made my day. they are pure raw talent! amazing stage performance. the kinda mix indie and nu-folk. they had wonderful voices that worked so well together.

Photobucket

after we saw Slow Club myself and my friend laura stuck around the social to see who would be on next, while the others went back. we were so happy we stayed! we ended up seeing Jeremy Warmsley. we was brill!! he had such a different kind of voice, and wore wicked glasses!

Photobucket
After that we stealth to see Dan Deacon and the Midnight Juggernauts. Dan Deacon was crazy!! people were jumping around everywhere! Midnight Juggernauts were really cool too...but by the end of it i was just really sleepy!! and thinking about how we had another day to get through!!

....art art all around

I am sitting here again after a long day of being an art student. With lots of deadlines coming up, I am getting very stressed, but not really showing it...and maybe not understanding how much I have to do. I have to talk about my work tomorrow, and not 100% looking forward to that....not at all.Anyway, back to the art in hand, one of my little birds is trying to run away. The light bulb bird. I am praying that it will all go down well tomorrow.
Photobucket
While sorting out my work I got myself a new cd; the long awaited Flight of the Conchords album!! Loving all the tracks, Inner City Pressure, Boom, and Business Time.
